Mix sounds quiet even after maximiser3/11/2023 Same deal as what I'm describing.įirst thing you need to understand is you cant have every element in your mix loud or sounding big. (You could find a cheap on on if loudness is your only desire.)ĮDIT: There is good advice here re headroom, compression, frequency separate. (there is some finesse in making mixes that are easier to master "big" which, as I know it includes use of broad stereo spectrum, use of broad frequency spectrum, individual track compression.)įind a musician you know who does mastering to show you the basics, check out some articles online on how to do it yourself, or take it to a mastering engineer. Mastering for loudness involves taking the track as a whole and adding layers of limiting, compression, and possibly EQ (and/or dynamic eq aka multiband compression) to fill out the frequency spectrum. Any finished "professional" indie track has been mastered too, albeit not to the commercial level perhaps. Don't beat yourself up about it! Any commercial track you ever hear has undergone an intensive mastering process. Your mixes are quieter because they aren't mastered.
